Birding in Uganda

Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, is not just a destination for gorilla trekking and savannah safaris; it’s also one of the world’s best destinations for birders chasing the legendary shoebill stork (Balaeniceps rex). Birding in Uganda offers a unique and unforgettable experience for nature lovers.

With its prehistoric appearance and solitary habits, the shoebill is among the most sought-after birds on any birder’s life list. Uganda’s wetlands host several locations to encounter this magnificent species. Here are the top 5 spots to seek the shoebill, plus tips and practical info for planning your trip.

1. Mabamba Swamp

Just west of Entebbe on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, Mabamba Swamp is the classic destination for spotting shoebill storks in Uganda. This expansive wetland is a Ramsar-designated site teeming with papyrus channels, water lilies, and a rich diversity of waterbirds including the elusive shoebill.

The best way to explore Mabamba is by canoe with a local guide at dawn, when shoebills are most active and feeding. Riders glide through narrow papyrus channels, scanning the reeds for the bird’s silhouette. Sightings here are frequent enough that even first-timers often tick the species within minutes of launching.

2. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary isn’t just for rhinos; it is also home to shoebills and over 300 bird species. While less famous than Mabamba, the shoebill canoe tours here are beautifully atmospheric, with early morning paddles offering serene views and excellent birding.

Visitors often combine rhino tracking with birding for a unique Ugandan wildlife experience. Local guides know the best spots and sightings.

3. Murchison Falls National Park

At Murchison Falls National Park, the shoebill awaits in one of Uganda’s most spectacular landscapes: the Nile Delta, where the river flows into Lake Albert. Early morning boat cruises along the Nile’s papyrus-lined channels offer great chances to see shoebills alongside waterbirds, hippos, crocodiles, and scenic panoramas. Additionally, this location pairs perfectly with a longer wildlife safari, making it ideal if you want to combine big game and birding in one trip.

4. Semuliki National Park

Western Uganda’s Semuliki National Park lies at the edge of the Congo Basin, where vast wetlands and lowland forest provide habitat for shoebills, though sightings here are more seasonal and less predictable than at Mabamba or Ziwa. Nevertheless, this destination rewards adventurous birders with a sense of solitude and an immersive rainforest-swamp mosaic rich in bird species rarely seen elsewhere in the country.

5. Lake Mburo National Park

Best known for its zebra herds and classic safari drive circuits, Lake Mburo National Park nevertheless features papyrus-fringed wetlands that occasionally attract shoebill storks alongside a lively mix of waterbirds.

Planning Your Shoebill Safari

• Go at dawn: Shoebills are typically most active in the early morning, feeding before the heat of the day.

• Hire knowledgeable guides: Local guides can dramatically increase your chances by knowing where shoebills tend to loaf or hunt.

• Combine with other wildlife: Spots like Ziwa and Murchison offer spectacular multi-species experiences.
