Gorilla Habituation Experience vs Gorilla Trekking: Which Should You Choose?
October 15, 2026KISORO, UGANDA — If you walk around Kisoro in the morning, it’s easy to fall in love with the mountain views. But beyond the scenery, something exciting is happening with the upcoming Mountain Gorilla Festival 2026. The local community and conservationists are transforming this corner of southwestern Uganda into a major hotspot for sports tourism and gorilla conservation.

Following an official media launch at the Sheraton Hotel, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), alongside the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), announced the highly anticipated Mountain Gorilla Festival 2026. Set for November 19 to 22, 2026, in Kisoro District, the festival features its flagship sporting spectacle, the Virunga Gorilla Marathon, on Saturday, November 21, 2026.
Plans are also underway to make the festival an annual tradition that rotates across the Kigezi region’s districts—including Kisoro, Kanungu, Rubanda, Kabale, Rukiga, and Rukungiri.
Protecting Gorillas, Empowering Communities
Under the official theme “Protecting Gorillas, Empowering Communities” and the tagline “Run. Explore. Conserve,“ the event highlights how wildlife protection and community prosperity directly support each other.
Speaking at the launch, UWA Executive Director Dr. James Musinguzi emphasized that conservation succeeds when surrounding communities actively participate and directly benefit from tourism through employment, guiding, hospitality, and entrepreneurship.
