Packing Guide for a Uganda Safari

Planning a safari in Uganda is an exciting adventure. From tracking mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to spotting elephants in Murchison Falls National Park, every day brings a new wildlife experience. But to fully enjoy your trip, packing the right gear is essential. Uganda’s climate, terrain, and activities require thoughtful preparation. This complete packing guide will help you know exactly what to bring for a smooth and comfortable safari experience.

1. Clothing

When packing for a Uganda safari, think comfortable, neutral, and practical. Neutral Colors Are Best. Choose earth tones like khaki, beige, brown, and olive green. Bright colors can attract insects or distract wildlife, while dark blue and black may attract tsetse flies. Lightweight, Breathable Fabrics. Uganda can be warm during the day but cooler in the mornings and evenings. Pack lightweight clothing that allows layering.

2. Footwear

Uganda’s terrain varies from savannah plains to muddy rainforest trails. Bring: Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers (for game drives and lodge wear), Sturdy hiking boots (essential for gorilla or chimp trekking), Sandals or flip flops (for relaxing at your lodge), Make sure your hiking boots are broken in before travel to avoid blisters.

3. Safari Accessories You Shouldn’t Forget

The right accessories can significantly enhance your safari experience.

• Wide-brim hat or cap (sun protection)
• Sunglasses with UV protection
• Lightweight scarf or buff (dust protection)
• Reusable water bottle
• Small backpack (for day trips and trekking)
• Binoculars (for better wildlife viewing)
• Camera with extra batteries and memory cards
• Travel adapter (Uganda uses Type G plugs, 240V)

4. Health and Toiletries

While Uganda has pharmacies in major towns, it’s best to bring essentials from home. Pack:

• Personal prescription medication
• Insect repellent (with DEET recommended)
• Sunscreen (SPF 30+)
• Lip balm with SPF
• Hand sanitizer
• Wet wipes
• Basic first aid kit

5. Documents and Money

Keep important documents organized and secure.

• Passport (valid for at least 6 months)
• Uganda visa (if required)
• Yellow fever vaccination certificate
• Travel insurance details
• Copies of permits (especially gorilla permits)
• Some cash in USD (small denominations for tips)

6. Seasonal Considerations

Uganda has two rainy seasons (March–May and October–November). If traveling during these months, pack extra waterproof layers and quick dry clothing. Even during dry seasons, brief showers are possible so a lightweight rain jacket is always recommended.

Safari Activity Based Packing Guide

Safari Activity	What You’ll Especially Need
Game Drives	Hat, sunglasses, camera, binoculars, light jacket
Gorilla Trekking	Hiking boots, long sleeves, gloves, rain jacket, 2L water
Chimpanzee Tracking	Waterproof shoes, insect repellent, small backpack
Boat Safari	Sunscreen, camera strap, hat

Travel Light but Smart

Most safari vehicles have limited luggage space. Soft sided duffel bags are preferred over hard suitcases, especially for fly in safaris. Try to pack efficiently and avoid overpacking. Laundry services are available at many mid range and luxury lodges, allowing you to pack fewer clothing items.
