Conquer the Mystical Mountains of the Moon

The Rwenzori Mountains, famously known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” are one of Africa’s most breathtaking and challenging hiking destinations. Straddling the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Rwenzoris offer dramatic snow capped peaks, tropical rainforests, alpine meadows, glaciers, and unique plant life found nowhere else on Earth. If you are looking for a true adventure far from crowded tourist trails, hiking the Rwenzoris should be at the top of your list.

Why Hike the Rwenzoris?

Unlike Mount Kilimanjaro, which is largely a high altitude walk, the Rwenzoris provide a more technical and varied hiking experience. The terrain is rugged and often muddy, with steep climbs, river crossings, and moss covered forests that feel straight out of a fantasy movie. The range’s highest peak, Margherita Peak (5,109 meters) on Mount Stanley, is Africa’s third highest summit. Hikers are rewarded with incredible biodiversity. As you ascend, you pass through multiple vegetation zones: tropical rainforest, bamboo forests, giant heather trees, and alpine landscapes filled with giant lobelias and groundsels. The scenery changes dramatically each day, making the journey as exciting as the summit itself.

Best Time to Visit

The best months for hiking the Rwenzoris are typically during the drier seasons: June to August and December to February

What to Pack

Packing correctly is crucial for comfort and safety. Essentials include:
