New Rules & Pricing

Standing just meters away from a 400-pound silverback is often described as a spiritual experience. However, the logistics of getting there have changed. If you are planning a trek in 2026, you need to navigate a new landscape of sector-based bookings, updated health protocols, and, for the first time in years, significant seasonal discounts.

This guide breaks down the essential “Key Takeaways for 2026″ to ensure your permit is secured and your encounter is seamless.

Official 2026 Gorilla Permit Pricing

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) updates its conservation tariffs biannually. For the current cycle (ending June 30, 2026), the following rates apply per person, per trek. Note that a major shift occurs on July 1, 2026, when the Habituation fee increases.

Category	Standard Trek (1 Hour)	Habituation Experience (4 Hours)
Foreign Non-Resident (FNR)	$800 USD	$1,800 USD*
Foreign Resident (FR)	$700 USD	$1,600 USD
Rest of Africa (ROA)	$500 USD	$1,000 USD
East African Citizen (EAC)	UGX 300,000	UGX 750,000

*The current $1,500 habituation rate is only guaranteed by the UWA until June 30, 2026. With the next tariff review approaching, industry experts anticipate a price hike for late 2026. Booking your dates before the current cycle ends is the best way to lock in today’s pricing and avoid potential increases!

New Rules for 2026: What Has Changed?

1. The Low-Season Discount (New for 2026!)

In a landmark move to stimulate “green season” travel, UWA has reintroduced discounted permits for the months of April, May, and November.

• Price: $600 for Foreign Non-Residents (a $200 saving!).

• Condition: These permits are date-specific and cannot be rescheduled. You must be certain of your dates before booking.

2. Suspension of the 7-Day Hold

As of March 1, 2026, the “soft hold” is a thing of the past. Previously, operators could reserve a permit for 7 days without payment. Now, full payment is required immediately to secure a permit. This prevents “permit hoarding” and ensures that available spots go to travelers with confirmed flights.

3. Sector-Based Booking

You no longer book a specific gorilla family. Instead, you book one of the four sectors in Bwindi:

• Buhoma (North): The “classic” sector with luxury lodges and gentler trails.

• Ruhija (East): High altitude, cooler air, and a favorite for birdwatchers.

• Rushaga (South): Home to the most families and the only place for Habituation.

• Nkuringo (South): Offers the most dramatic views and the steepest, most athletic hikes.

Vital Rules & 2026 Etiquette

Conservation is the priority. In 2026, rangers are stricter than ever regarding health and distance.

• The 10-Meter Rule: While the old standard was 7 meters, the 2026 protocol strictly enforces a 10-meter (32-foot) buffer to prevent the cross-species transmission of respiratory droplets.

• Mandatory Masks: You must wear a medical-grade surgical mask when in the direct presence of the gorillas.

• The Illness Refund: If you feel sick (cough, flu, or fever), do not hide it. If you self-report to the Warden before the trek starts, UWA often provides a 50% refund or a chance to reschedule (for standard permits). This protects the gorillas’ 98.4% human-like DNA.

Crucial Traveler Intel: Your 2026 Safari Questions Answered

Before you step into the mist, there are a few “non-negotiables” and common concerns that every traveler should understand. Here is the latest guidance for the 2026 trekking season.

1. What Happens if I Get Sick? (The 50% Safety Net)

Because gorillas share 98.4% of our DNA, a human cold can be fatal to them. If you develop a cough, flu, or fever before your trek, do not hide it. * The Policy: If you volunteer to stay behind due to illness, and the Park Warden certifies your condition, you are eligible for a 50% refund of your permit fee.

• Jackal’s Tip: We always recommend travel insurance that covers “cancel for any reason” to ensure you don’t lose the other 50%.

2. The “No-See” Guarantee

Tourists often ask, “What if we don’t find them?” In 2026, the success rate remains over 98% thanks to advanced trackers who head out at 5:00 AM.

• The Safety Valve: In the extremely rare event that a family cannot be located (usually due to a sudden migration or heavy storm), UWA policy allows for a 75% refund or a second trekking attempt the following day if permits are available.

3. Dealing with Mobility Issues

Think you’re too old or “unfit” for the jungle? Think again. The “African Helicopter” (Sedan Chair) is a local service where four porters carry you through the forest in a specialized chair.

• Cost: This service typically costs between $300 – $500, but it ensures that mobility challenges never stand in the way of a silverback encounter.

4. The “Tuck Your Trousers” Rule

It sounds silly until it happens to you. “Safari Ants” are common in Bwindi. They are harmless but have a painful bite.

• The Rule: Always tuck your trousers into your long socks. This simple fashion “faux pas” is the single best way to stay comfortable during a 4-hour trek.
